I've considered doing that, Matt, but I found it to be impractical. On the '97 Dura-Ace the right and left housing stops on the down tube are different. If you run the rear shifter cable on the left side of the bike the you lose the adjustability.

I don't mean to bash your idea. I run cables that way on my mountain bike and it works great, but with STI (at least the '97 Dura-Ace this doesn't seem like a good idea)
