: Hi Gary! i don't know what "drivetrain" you are using but I was riding a 7 spd DureAce STI on my 1994 Merlin Road. This new Ultega has a "hollow spinde& sealed cartridge. The cranks are also hollow so the weight saving is quite noticable even with the 30 tooth granny ring! Yes the spindle length is slightly longer but quite frankly i don't notice it at all. i don't have the actual weights to give you but i'm sure a local Shimano dealer would oblige you. i quite frankly can't get over the fact as to how nice this new Ultegra "system" is! no difference in shifting quality that i can see or feel. i did switch my brakes from DurAce to Ultegra & i must say that the finish is perhaps finer on the DurAce but the stopping "power" is no different! if you are playing the back nine like me (64) i would highly recommend "granny"! i'm told that even some of the pro's are "running" a triple now! sorry i'm not much help but don't hesitate to contact me if i can be of any help at all.Ride Safe! pje

You said your 1994 Merlin is equipped with "7 spd DureAce STI...". No such animal, my man. You are told that some pros are using triples? Sure, they are called mountainbikers.
