Oops, I goofed the first message. Try again...
Several years ago I got so fed up with the poor
attitude from one of the local Merlin dealers that
I called up a favorite shop located where I used
to live: Belmont Wheel Works in Massachusetts -
about 2000 miles away. Meticulous checking over
which frame size was best, thorough follow-up, and
good price all convinced me to buy from them.
Plus, all my earlier experiences with them were
excellent. Buying via phone and UPS was fairly
easy, as was assembling the mostly-built bike.
(I assume that if you're buying a bike this
expensive you've done some work yourself.)
Wheel Works also has a LOT of experience building
up Merlins; I'm told they are the largest Merlin
retailer in the U.S.
By the way, the lousy local shop(s) was NOT Excel,
which I did not know of at the time. The lousy
shop(s) had made clear on several previous
purchases how little they thought of their
customers. I will not elaborate here, though.
