In June 97 I bought a Merlin Mountain with full XTR, Mavic 217, Syncros, Judy SL equipment. The bike is great and reliable. After riding for three months on
Californiaīs loose and sandy trails, Iīm back in Switzerland. The same bike works works also extremely well on steep Alpine trails with hard, rocky surfaces, on loose gravel or in muddy conditions. This is also thanks to the burly 2.1 Velociraptor tires. Just make sure you get the right frame size! Iīm six feet tall and the 18.75 inch frame is perfect for me because I like a stretched out position (120mm/0° stem, 1.5 inch riser bar). For someone who prefers a more comfortable riding position, the frame would certainly be too big, because Merlin frames have a fairly long top tube. Such a bike costs a pretty penny but it's an investment if you donīt go for the latest fashion fad.
Keep on riding, Andy.
