: : : : I own a mountain and a road frame made by Merlin. I am currently purchasing a XLM. I have been using my mountain for commuting and love it! The reason I want an XLM is to have a second bike, one for off-road, one for commuting. If you are talking about putting a rack on anything why worry about the extra 1/2 pound? Currently I use a messenger bag that works swell for commuting.

: : : I suppose the question I am really asking is the XLM frame weaker than the Mountain frame? for $600 more - This is not what I expected. Thanks

: : I wouldn't say the XLM frame is weaker. More accurately stated, I'd say the XLM is designed to be as light as possible without sacrificing durability. The addition of racks may place stress on the thinnest parts of the butted tubes used in the seatstays and chainstays.
: : Look at it this way. The XLM is aimed at the hardcore cross country rider and the standard mountain frame is aimed at more of a multipurpose application.

: : Just my thoughts.

: : ps I own an Extralight road frame and can't wait to get an XLM.

: :You want to put a rack on a XLM?Might as well add a basket to put groceries in when you visit the market! The idea is warped! It equates to fitting roof racks on a Porsche.XLM is a racing machine,by fitting racks, not only are you defeating its intended purpose, you also ruin it from an aesthetic point of view.
