Late Model Forks on Older Merlins

posted by Mike NEville on september 25, 1998 at 05:17:37:

I, like a lot of Merlin owners, scrimped and saved to be finally able to afford
a Merlin mountain frame. I bought mine back in 1992. Its still serving me well, but
there are less and less lightweight forks avaliable the older frames, even though
the frames will last practically forever. Example: Judy SL's went the threadless
1", with no threaded avaiable, whilst SID's aren't even avaliable in 1" at all.
I have been told that most fork manufacturere won't even offer 1" next year.
Surely there is enough 1" headtube owners out there to warrant the availability
of lightweight forks? Surely a bit of weight could be
sacrificed for a good ol' threaded 1" steerer?
I'm unfortunate that I also bought an Ibis quill stem, when I bought my Merlin.
I'm now in the market for some lightweight forks, and
best will be 1998 Judy SL's with a new (Ibis?) stem.
That starts getting costly down here in New Zealand.
I'd really like anyone elses views on this subject.
Aside from all the above, I love my Merlin. It still rides and looks like
new. To anyone considering buying on: DO IT! You won't
regret it!

Cheers from Christchurch, New Zealand

Mike Neville
