: : : : : Has anyone experienced premature rim wear with the 98 Shimano Ultegra brake pads. I have less than 500 miles on Mavic Open Pro's and it looks as if grooves are starting to appear on these rims.
: : : : Hi Dana! I have Mavic SUP Ceramic Rims & have put over 1200 miles on them using the Shimano 1998 Ultegra brake pads. My concern is that i am fast running out of pad material i have not noticed any undue stress to the rims but probably the ceramic braking surface is helping. i can't locate replacement pads from any bike shop around here. Shimano apparently could care less!! pje
: : : : Paul....try La Biccicletta in Toronto...they can get their hands on some if they don't have any in stock. Their number is 416-762-2679...ask for Henry or Heath. For what it's worth....having the same premature wear problem with the new Dura-Ace pads.
: : Hi Bernie! Appreciate Your pointing me in the right direction friend. I have 2 bike shops here in Ottawa /Hull area trying to locate ultegra pads. I'm told that the pad material is the same on the new Ultegra & Durace (replacement pads). I'm going to "The Big Smoke" soon & will look up Henry/Heath for sure. Ride Safe. paul
: I was surfing through and saw this topic. I have Mavic Open Sup with 98 Ultegra too and I have noticed the anodizing wear away at an alarming rate. I noted however that the sidewall is quite intact, so after 600 mi. the problem I am seeing is strictly with the finish, at least so far. I am also riding some sew-ups (Mavic 330) and they do not show any wear with the finish after 100 miles. I ride in the Pacifica, Ca. area and all rides here
: tend to have around 2000ft. of elevation to them, so that translates into some screaming descents, so the brakes get used.
Inreply to "Pacific CA Area" You lucky son -of-a-gun YOU!!! I'd kill to be able to ride in your part of the world!! Had the great fortune to visit your area not too long ago & most every cyclist I saw ( there were many!) had legs like pistons! The absolute beauty of the countryside is beyond anything we have here in Central Canada. I'd be prepaired to sacrifice my rims for the joy of riding along the Pacific Coast CA! Ride Safe! pje
