The big news is that Cannondale has licensed its HeadShok suspension-fork technology to Merlin. The East Coast titanium bike maker is expected to produce dual-suspension bikes with the distinctive shock-in-the-headtube front shock (as opposed to
telescoping, suspended fork legs a la RockShox, Manitou et al) beginning in ’99. HeadShok-equipped Merlins may be on display as early as the Interbike trade show in September in Lost Wages, Nevada. This isn’t ‘Dale’s first HeadShok licensing
arrangement—Rhygin sold some in Europe—but it’s by far the highest-profile deal for the technology to date. Cannondale said it has no plans to try to license the technology to any large bike makers (a.k.a. major competitors).
