I have had the creaking bottom bracket problem on my Extralight. I've experienced the problem two different ways:
(1) the bottom bracket had started to loosen. The problem went away after my local shop paid special attention to it during an overhaul. I've heard recommendations of reinserting the bottom bracket with teflon tape on the threads, but I didn't try it myself.
(2) The frame cracked near the bottom bracket. In this case Merlin cheerfully replaced the frame. It was about as positive an experience as one can have for such an unfortunate event. Look carefully for for a hairline fracture around the bottom bracket. It is very hard to spot initially. Sometimes running your fingernail across the tubing you can detect a topology change as your nail sticks at the fault.
