After owning two XL road bikes built with both Dura-Ace and Record groups, I have, at some point experienced a "clicking" sound eminating from the bottom bracket area on both bikes (usually most noticable on hard sprints or standing climbing) on numerous occasions. This stemed from four different causes. As follows... (1) Dry threads on the bottom bracket. The fix: teflon tape on threads.(* NOTE: with new Dura-Ace B.B. the B.B. shell must be perfectly aligned or problems will always haunt you!) (2) Dry threads on pedal spindles. The fix: remove pedals and apply anti-sieze or white grease on threads and reinstall. (3)This took me a while to discover. Dry threads on bolts holding front derailuer clamp on. The fix: You guessed it,...Anti-sieze or white grease on bolt threads and reinstall. (4) This was also a tough one. Same type of clicking sound seemed to be comming from B.B. area, only this time the problem was a newly rebuilt rear wheel (with Locktight on nipples) was "clicking" on one of the nipples where the Locktight had broken loose making a tic, tic, tic sound with each wheel revolution! I swore it was the B.B.! Turned out the fix was to put a drop on WD40 at the offending nipple and all was quiet. It's my sincere hope that this information is usefull to my fellow Merlin owners.
